The summer season brings us brighter days and warmer temperatures. All seasonal changes have an effect on your plants and your care routine needs to be adjusted accordingly.
Here are a few important things to keep in mind when it comes to Summer plant care.
LIGHT
The length of the daylight is longer and the sun’s rays are much stronger.
Most houseplants will benefit from an hour or two of direct sunlight each day early morning and late afternoon but they must be protected from hot, intense sun for the rest of the day.
Houseplants that were happy by south or west-facing windows all winter may get sunburned there in summer.
Sheer white curtains can protect plants against heat and burning sun while allowing adequate amounts of light to come through. Or you can move plants away from the brightest, hottest locations.
TEMPERATURE
Temperature changes occur throughout the year outside as well as indoors. Optimal temperature varies somewhat among different houseplants. However, most prefer the range between 65F and 80F.
Not exposing plants to excessively cold air and providing a good air circulation by a fan, will create a good environment for plants to go through the summer season.
BTW, indoor plants don’t mind spending summer out-of-doors but make sure they are not sitting in full sun all day.
Make sure to bring them back indoors before night temperatures drop below 69F.
WATER
We all know plants need regular watering, but how often they should be watered depends on many factors. Water requirements vary depending on the size and type of houseplant, container, light, temperature, airflow, and humidity.
Important to know that AC affects plant water absorption. Soil dries slower in cooler temperatures, as a result watering frequency will change.
ALWAYS CHECK THE SOIL BEFORE WATERING
We recommend using the Soil Moisture Meter. This tool will help you to understand when your plant is ready to be watered and will make the transition of plant care from season to season much easier.
TRAVELS
Most of the problems happen when we are away, even if it is just for a couple of days. Having windows closed and blinds down, and turning AC and/or fan off will create a very stressful environment for plants. Hot temperatures, and lack of airflow and light will suffocate plants, and, as a result, they might die.
SUMMER PLANT CARE BULLET POINTS
- Do not place plants near the AC unit. Forced cold air stream will damage the leaves. Keep your plants at least 3 feet away.
- Do not turn the AC off during hot summer days. Optimal temperature varies somewhat among different houseplants. However, most prefer a range between 65F and 80F.
- Do not close blinds when away. Without sufficient light, plants will develop weak, spindly growth, and will be more vulnerable to other problems.
- Keep the fan running to ensure air circulation. Good air circulation is essential for plant health.
- Filter direct and long sunlight exposure. Most plants will be ok for an hour or two of direct light each day as long as it’s not too hot. Move your plants back from the locations where they are exposed to the sun all day, or filter direct sun with sheer curtains.
- Adjust watering routine. Water frequency varies depending on the light, temperature, airflow, and humidity. During Summer, the indoor temperature is cooler due to AC, and soil will dry out more slowly. Test the soil of your plants once every 7-10 days during any season change to adjust your care routine accordingly. We strongly recommend getting the Soil Moisture Meter. This tool will help you to understand when your plant is ready for a drink to avoid over or under-watering.
We hope this information is helpful.
Wishing you and your plants a great Summer season!
